Skin cells divide by mitosis, a process in which a cell duplicates its chromosomes then splits into two identical cells. The two cells then divide again, and the reproductions continue almost indefinitely. While each cell is identical to the one before it, properties are lost over time. This natural, genetically programmed breakdown causes the skin to produce less lipids – large chemically complex molecules that maintain the skin’s natural high-water content – and the reduced elasticity and inability to fend off free radicals results in aged, lackluster skin.
Most skin care products available today promote the routine use of exfoliants, cell-regenerating creams and chemical peels to fight the affects of aging. Initially making the skin feel smooth and soft, the products actually strip the skin of moisture-trapping lipids and cause the body to regenerate more cells, speeding up the aging process. While Reset Skin Care supports the use of these exfoliation techniques occasionally, they do not recommend them as part of a daily skin regiment.
